Tommy Torres may be known as a gifted songwriter who writes and produces great songs for other artists, but as a solo artist, he does alright for himself.

His latest opus is Estar De Moda No Esta De Moda—a rather indecisive title, we think. One of the most outstanding songs on the album is “Me Cuesta Tanto Olvidarte”, which he sings with a great deal of vulnerability. “Se Apaga El Sol” is another worthwhile song.

It took us a while to figure out that this album is a reissue of a 2005 album he released on Ole Music—only this time there’s a new cover, and it’s just one disc as opposed to two. This time though this album will see more distribution channels, as this time around it’s on the Wea International. Very strategic.

Giro Lopez has a new album out entitled “Todavía Hay Amor.” He has just released another single from it called “Una Bala.”. The album also includes “Islas en el Mar”, a Latin rendition of an old Bee Gees Song, which he sings as a duet with La India.

Singer-producer-songwriter Tommy Torres put the chichuahua out of the bag, telling Reforma Diario:

“El compuso las canciones. Será un disco muy bueno, diferente (a su anterior producción), porque regresamos al pop”.

Can’t wait to see what my Alejandro comes up with. You better believe it’s going to be an upgrade from El Tren de los Momentos.

Café Tacvba performed in Buenos Aires over the weekend as part of their 20 Years/20 Cities Tour. Their next stops according to El Informador will include Spain, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Estados Unidos, and England.

What a way for the respected Mexican band to celebrate such a big milestone in Latin music.

Cristian Castro’s newest album has hit the streets. He calls it El Cupable Soy Yo. You gotta hand it to Cris. Whereas all the other Latin artists are always come up with album titles that glorify them, or make them come out as the victim, Cristian goes out and says it straight up: it’s his fault.

Yes, I know that I shouldn’t take album titles too literally, but hey!

Okay, I don’t know why Cristian’s record label thought it would be cute for him to conceive that leprechaun-style album cover. Beats me. Oh, well at least he tries to be original…a little.

Now let’s talk about the music. Cristian is known for his sweeping ballads, and he delivers a lot of them on this album with songs like No Engañes al Amor, as well as the self-reproaching title track, and “Eres Tu” and “La Espalda”.

Puertorriqueño papi Tommy Torres opened up the series of concert for Ricardo Ajorna at the Auditorio Nacional de la Ciudad de México. Tommy gushed at having the opportunity to perform with the socially-conscious guatemalco singer, telling the Reforma Diario:

“Ricardo tiene una manera de decir las cosas como nadie más. Siempre busca encontrar un tema para escribir; de cualquier cosa cotidiana él hace una novela grande.”

“Ricardo has a style of saying things in a way no one else can. He’s always on the look out for songs to compose. He could take a simple little thing from everyday life and turn into a sweeping novel.”

That sure is a lot of admiration. Tommy T is so humble.

And you thought the folks at the Banana Republic were only good for pretty clothes! They’re releasing a collection called City Sounds, and none other than Tommy Torres will be among the artists whose songs is featured. Tommy’s song in question is “Imparable”. It’s also on his album Tarde O Temprano. That’s some smart Puerto Rican papi. It so happens that it’s the next single off the album.

The disc will also introduce North American audiences to Esperanza Spalding’s song “Sunglight”. If you haven’t had the chance to introduce your eardrum to Mz. Esperanza, my advice to you is to get with it and give this an acclaimed artist, who’s of Spanish and Cuban heritage, a chance.

David Sánchez is also on the disc. The Grammy-winning Puerto Rican jazz tenor sax’s piece “Manto Azul”, snatched from his Cultural Survival album, completes the Latin stew tracks on the Banana Republic CD. They should have thrown in a few tracks from his other album Melaza, but I’m sure there’s plenty of other compilations to go around.
