Grammy-nabbing Eddie Palmieri discusses being a Nuyorican and its influence on his music.

Being born here and listening to the music that was played here; the orquestras in the 40’s like the Morales Brothers, made an impression on me. My brother Charlie would bring home albums by bands here in New York, that were originally from Puerto Rico. These guys made a big name for themselves here and brought over some of the culture from the island, en nombre de Puerto Rico. But when I started to record on my own, that is when I began to realize the importance of the music, our heritage and the role we play in passing it along to future generations.

Aw, there’s nothing more than than a proud Latino talking pride to make your day. Is it me or are Puerto Ricans the ones who carry their Latinness with the most pride?

Some parents have been known to use the belt, but this is how Rosario Dawson’s mother Isabel Celeste handled bizness when Rosie got unruly:

My mom licked me — that was her punishment. If I was a little uppity or if I didn’t listen or if she wanted to get my attention, she’d lick the side of my face or under my armpit.

My mom’s a six-foot-tall amazon and she’d say, ‘‘You came out of my vagina and I own every part of you,’’ and she’d lick me like I was her wee pup and she was a lioness. It was humiliating and really intense. Very primal. It’s not spanking, but it definitely works.
