Latino Music News: Mariah Carey’s New Album + Luis Miguel
Mariah Carey’s Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel finally hits stores this week.
We’ve already been exposed to her single “Obsessed”, but her label promises that she’s going to be delivering the goods with this album as well.
We’ve already told you about her remaking the 1980s Foreigner song “I Want to Know What Love Is”, but she’s worked with Tricky Stewart, The Dream and remix makers Seamus Haji and Paul Emanuel as well.
When the Foreigner song was initially released in 1985, it actually went to Number One on the Billboard charts. A lot of people are anticipating that just like Mariah set a record with “I’ll Be There”—making a hit out of a song that was a hit in the past—she may just do the same with the Foreigner ballad.
Luis Miguel is releasing a collection of remixes this month. No Culpes a La Noche is a 10-song collection, a little meager on the number of tracks, especially since this is LuisMi’s first collection of remixes, to my knowledge.
“Como es posible que a mi lado” gets a really nice treatment from Hex Hector, who is also the producer chosen to give some new life to LuisMi’s hit “Te propongo esta noche”.
Danny Saber, a former musician of the LA-based group Black Grape, who’s worked with Busta Rhymes, Madonna and Seale in the past gives a pop take to “Sol, arena y mar”, which many folks would say is among LuisMi’s signature songs.

Comment made on September 16, 2009 at 1:38 pmI don’t think that “I Wanna Know What Love Is” will take off at all. It’s too close to the original. Most cover songs are successful because the new version brings something new to the table (unless the song is too old for a generation to even remember). The original was released a little over 20 years ago, so the song is still fresh in everyone’s memories. I think she’ll quickly release a follow-up once she realizes that pop music today focuses of fast-paced beats and the defining moments in songs are the sounds (not the vocals); vocals are all anonymous these days, it’s all about the sound.
